Writing Stuff
Nov. 13th, 2017 09:12 pmSo recently I was talking with some folks about my writing and I talked about how I wanted to write a story about transhumanism and such and the transition from life to post-life. But I haven't been writing in a long time, I've been spending most of my time working on video games and playing video games. But, writing doesn't use up the same juice as coding or gaming, so there's no reason I can't do that too, save for time. And I have a lot of downtime where I feel like I can't do anything, anyways...
Right now is a time sort of like that, so I thought I'd try writing a bit. I'm feeling a bit upset though because I just read a bunch of Twitter and it's really upsetting. Most upsetting was people trying to be good and screwing it up.
It's so stupid! They're calling people bad and asking others to ignore them, in a big way. Like, shun them from society. They treat people they don't agree with as tainted and wrong somehow, unforgivable. But they're above killing so they exile and shun instead. The problem is when you give up on execution and you give up on reformation you're back to execution again, by proxy. Either that or you're making them from annoyances into enemies; real enemies who will be forced into banditry by your shun, if you convince enough people to join you.
Anyways that's not what I came on here to write about. I want to write about a positive future, not a frustrating present.
I often think of writing a story of transition from a nearbaseline human to a transhuman in a far future setting, but I'm also considering writing a story in phases, highlighting the changes society goes through as it marches along.
There's a point I can't be sure of where life has changed so much that the goalposts for goodness and the future people want is unknowable to someone who isn't in that time. Completely unpredictable.
Of course from the history of scifi we can see how discoveries always change our expectations of the future and what's realistic. I've heard people call Star Wars "Science Fantasy" but it wasn't Science Fantasy yet in the 70s! These things are a product of their times. Of course certain tropes tend to stick around even after we discover how silly they are, like force fields.
I think we'll probably successfully build a Space Elevator within the next two hundred years, but it may also be impossible on Earth. It's very tricky to get worthwhile payloads into space. We could shoot bullets up there pretty easy, but something like a computer or a human it's much more difficult. Gotta go slow enough that we don't smush it but fast enough that we don't get pulled back down by gravity. It'd be nice if there was another option, some way of lifting objects off the ground slowly without using a ton of energy to keep them there. I've read about alternatives to space elevators before. Stuff more like space roller coasters, but these structures, if we ever build them, could fail catastrophically...
The other problem with space is that there isn't a whole lot to do up there right now. Some science, yes, figuring stuff out about physics and biology, but as it is we haven't been able to create an isolated biosphere yet so we can't build a permenant space habitat.
There's a lot we can do to make things easier for getting up into space and doing things there. For one thing, if we transition from humans to post-life androids we'll be more durable and maybe able to get up there easier. For another thing, if we transition from a normal biosphere to a post-life biosphere, we'll have full control of it and be able to easily and stably recreate it in space.
That said, we probably won't do those things until after we've come to master our own environment first. So, there's stages to the development of my future and I'm not sure what order they'll happen in. I have to make educated guesses and go with that.
But before I can start putting dates to events I need events in order of neccesity, what comes first.
That said, I'm losing my energy and enthusiasm for this.
What I really wanted to do when I sat down was write about my ideas for post-life androids. In particular my Adorabillians, but also things like my White Knights and other beings of their aquaintance.
Still I'm low on energy now. I don't know if I'll write about that right now.
I'mma just post this with what I've got so far, don't feel like writing anymore.
