1:45pm - Okay the job fair was a small affair with very different companies than those listed on the website. I applied with one of them, and paid $14.50 for parking. Alas. ^.^;;

I'm going to make the most of my time downtown by working hard at a local cafe.

I'm not sure if I should work on Maple's Key or SimpleBlog, but I'm thinking I'll do Maple's Key and strike while the tutorial code is fresh in my mind. I've got to make some changes to it after all.

2:28pm - Well this is frustrating. After all that work last night, I went ahead and copied Sebastian Lague's work wholesale and put it into Unity, planning to alter and improve it. But it doesn't work right, and I don't know why.

It's very frustrating. The version I had made while following along didn't show any of the bugs this latest version does. It moves through walls seemingly at random and embeds itself in the floor and other issues.

After all this I may have to write my own from scratch or come up with an alternative to crib from.

3:12pm - I looked around YouTube some more and didn't find a controller I liked anymore, but I did find some good tips for getting Unity's builtin physics solution to not suck, so I might try those.

Let's start by setting out goals though.

Maple needs to be able to run and jump left and right. Maple needs to be able to cancel jumps. Maple needs to be able to climb trees in the background, and climb walls.

I'm thinking Maple should switch between two legged running and four limb climbing fluidly when on arcs, but I'm not sure. At the very least she should climb with hands and feet.

I'll start by making a 2D character controller that can run and jump and jump-cancel and handle slopes. Then I'll add in the ability to climb walls, background elements, and the ability to jump through certain platforms like branches.

5:31pm - I don't have much time left before I have to go. I don't feel like I've accomplished much but I've been working pretty steadily.

I've been trying to work out a way to handle slopes well using Unity's basic physics implementation, by using the perpendicular of the ground normal to get a Vector2D in the direction of the highest slope in the direction the player is moving. Then, I'll push them that way.

We'll see if I can get something testable in the next 10 minutes, then I've got to go.

5:43pm - Yeah it's not working right now, but it's a good idea I think. I'll give it some more work when I get home maybe.
