11:23am - So yesterday I was talking to a friend and he made me realize I don't have any real enthusiasm for my current project; I've just been doing it to tell myself 'I'm working!' when really I have no real plans to make money off it or get a following or anything, so why aren't I working on something I really care about instead?
But you know, it's tough to say what that would be. I mean, I want to make an open source tool similar to the Spore Creature Creator, but that's a huge undertaking and I don't know if I'm anymore enthusiastic for it than I was for my Fantasy Trader game.
I've got a couple other ideas on my mind too, but I feel like they're just passing fancies. One is to make a game similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! but less buggy. Maybe a different setting too.
The other thing, well, I'm reading a book on Procedural Generation in Game Design by Tanya X. Short and Tarn Adams, and it's kind of inspiring. There's this idea for level generation that's just, super good. The game it's from is called Unexplored, and it's an action RPG roguelike. It's like ten bucks on Steam and I'm considering buying it, if only for research purposes. To hear them talk about how they designed the level generator is just amazing. It uses what they call Cyclic Design to make levels as opposed to a tree design. Very facinating stuff. But I don't exactly have a project I can just plug that into, so I'd have to make a whole game. I don't know what to do...
For now I'm going to read that book some more, which I consider 'work' and so I'm including it in this post.
11:42am - I remembered another thing I am mildly enthused about, and that's the creation of a game world for my friends and I to inhabit together. I'm not sure what form it would take, but it's something I still think about now and again.
12:03pm - Alright, that's enough reading for now. It was a good chapter but the next one is less interesting, but no less important.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do now though. My roommate is playing Animal Crossing on his Switch so I'm very distracted. Maybe I'll do some online research around the topics I'm interested in now.
12:48pm - I just watched this vid from GDC 2014 and it's pretty great, all about procedural animations in Overgrowth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNidsMesxSE
1:02pm - I feel like I've had enough work for now, but I'm not sure what else to do. That's frustrating.
Well, I'll figure it out.
