Platformer Thoughts
Aug. 12th, 2018 10:36 pmSo my roommate wants to sell off his copy of Kirby Star Allies to EB Games to get some money back, and I had been putting off playing the game, but now it's kind of do or don't, so I've been playing that. It's actually really quite good. Well, the single player is anyways. I don't think I'd want to play the Multiplayer anymore than I already have. But the levels are just great and the level design is great too.
It's got me wanting to make a 2D platformer in Unity, and that's silly. I mean, Unity is great for that, but I've already got so many games to work on right now. ^.^;;
That said it's been a couple days and the itch hasn't gone away. I've got a few ideas playing around in my head, but so much of what I want to do is just remixes of what Kirby's doin'. Kirby Maker would be nice. XD
But then, Kirby is pretty unique and specific in his utility. It works amazingly well, but a copy of Kirby would be too obvious.
The unique ideas I have for a platformer mostly make it more like a metroidvania, and if we're being honest, aren't Metroid and Castlevania platformers as well? Heh. Anyways the idea is to have all the zones connected to form routes between biomes. I kind've like the idea of something riffing on Digimon Adventure's File Island, with it's circle of biomes surrounding a tall mountain. That'd be an interesting thing to do I think.
The other thing I like to think about with regards to platformers is the idea of a-life and simulation. There are some game ideas I had originally considered for topdown or 3D games. Like, the idea of a game with NPC conflicts you can participate in and be drafted into. I had an idea a long time ago to take control away from the player and have them have play minigames to fight off the control, or just watch themselves be controlled. That kind of does something for my MC and TF kinks. XD
But yeah, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a basic platformer, really. It's just, I'm making so little progress on my projects already, it doesn't make sense to do this. Except, it might be fun, and fun might be a reason to work again.
Well, it won't be for another day or two before I can work probably, anyways.
I'll just think about it some more.
