11:02am - After a few weeks of suffering I finally feel ready and able to develop games again.

As I got out of bed this morning I thought, "I want to try making a prototype Dungeon Manager game."

I opened up Unity and made a new project and now I'm sitting here thinking, "Oh, well that's really not so simple as it seemed when I was getting out of bed."

Hah.

I really just wanted to dip myself back into Unity and make some simple game. Well, in four days Extra Credits is having a game jam so depending on how my week turns out I might try joining that.

I'd like to make something simple to flex my game making muscles and neurons and other body parts, but geez, a Dungeon Manager game? What was I thinking?

I should probably just make a simple platformer or something, though I've done that a couple times before.

I'll eat some breakfast and give it some thought.

12:10pm - Well I ate and thought and asked around and thought and ultimately remembered that I was going to make a Mascot Platformer called Maple's Key, about Maple the Squirrel and her magic key. So I'll give that a shot.

It'll need your basic platforming mechanics plus some form of walking up walls and trees and things because squirrel. We'll see what I can do.

12:35pm - Alright now I've tucked myself into bed since I was uncomfortable in my usual chair and with all the wind blowing outside. Hopefully I can still program like this.

Alas I just started hiccuping, so that sucks. Hopefully it'll go away soon.

12:39pm - The first things I usually make are platforms and a player character. I'm not sure how to handle the squirrel climbing mechanic though. Should I make the climbable things background elements you can walk past, or make them walls you must climb, or both?

I'm honestly not sure.

12:55pm - I decided to look for some inspiration online. After thinking about it, I decided that climbable trees should be background elements, and you should be able to climb walls as well.

I'm thinking that there will be transitions between walking and climbing at several different points. First, you might be walking along and the incline slopes up too much so you transition into climbing. Second, you might jump onto a wall and start climbing. Third, you might press up when in front of a background tree to climb it. Fourth, you might press up when next to a wall to climb it.

Those should cover transitions into climbing. Oh bother I've got hiccups again. What's up with that?

So what about transitioning back into walking/running? If you jump when you're climbing and land on a flatish incline, you'll transition back into walking/running.

3:34pm - Watched some tutorials for a bit to see if I could get some inspiration, but they didn't do things the way I want to. Gonna watch something else for a bit. Also had lunch. Was good.

4:04pm - I'm not really getting anything out of these videos, so that's kind of disappointing. I'll just have to try doing it myself.

4:10pm - I'm trying to decide how I want to handle input. I'm thinking about using an InputController script component on the player character GameObject. It'll read inputs from Unity and expose their values to the object it's on. Then I can put it on anything I want to be controlled by the player, and disable it if I want to stop player input.

But, that doesn't work so well for when you have more than one player or multiple inputs. I'd like this to be more generic.

4:16pm - Oh geez. I went to YouTube and did a search for Unity Input and apparently Unity has a new input system in beta, and a guy just put out a tutorial for using it four hours ago. XD

5:06pm - Alright I mostly just laid around watching videos and tutorials but now I'm spent. I need to take a break before I can work anymore. On the upside I did see a fun idea of using a static class as a gobetween twixt Unity and my moving things so I think I'll try that. It beats a Singleton Manager anyways.
