8:01 - Missed a boat, sitting in the harbour, thinking about all the other boats. Not literally, but figuratively. I saw a job ad on Indeed.ca for a Unity developer position in Toronto and thought to jump on it, but then decided to get some feedback from my job developer first. I looked at the ad again tonight and its' expired. I didn't go fast enough.
I wonder if I would have been accepted, or if I would've even been considered? No way to know now.
I switched from working in Unity to working in Godot over a year ago. My Unity portfolio pieces are all from three or four years ago. It's astonishing to look back and realize how little I've accomplished in the last three years. Frustrating too.
Anyways I keep wondering if I want to work independantly, on my own projects, or get a job making games. It's really the only thing I know how to do proficiently. My other skills and training have lapsed and I never practice them, only game development.
So why don't I just look for work in game development?
Well one reason was that locally, there's only a few major players, and they either have too-high standards, or don't make the kinds of games I'm interested in. They're also hardly ever hiring.
But also I haven't been considering working in Toronto, where most of the Game Studios are. Well arguably most of everything is in Toronto, it's a very big city. But if I got a job there I could make a lot of money, even with the commute. I live about two hours from Toronto, plus travel through the cities would tack on at least another hour, so the commute would be terrible. But I might not have to commute very much, if I'm primarily a remote worker.
So I've been a bit more open minded to the idea of working for a Toronto studio. But I still feel conflicted. Do I want to work like that? Would it destroy my interest in the main thing that gives my life meaning? Or would it enhance it and take it to a new level?
Most game developers I've known over the years eventually retired from the industry, their interest in games development either crushed by crunch and other negative business practices, or they just find other interests like having kids or something. I'm not likely to have kids in my lifetime, but who knows what else might come along?
I should probably try it, if I'm being honest. But nobody is hiring for Godot developers. ... *checks indeed* Okay so two companies are looking for Godot developers, and one is Unity who would want me to switch to their product anyways, and they're looking for a Sr. Dev.
The other one is a vague "Finish a game for us" posting. I guess their previous developer disappeared or something. I haven't finished a whole game in Godot so I don't think I'm the one they're looking for, I dunno though.
Oh wait I just noticed the ad is 30+ days old. Also they don't have much info on their website and social media. Oh well.
Now let's compare by looking at Unity jobs.
There's only a few of those as well it seems. Though it doesn't help that I added junior to the title search. And they're all 30+ days too.
8:40pm - Still lookin' but now I'm lookin' on Linkedin. Not much there either, within what I'm looking for.
Yeah I'm not finding much. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much and just keep working on my projects.
For now I'm going to sign off and get ready for my game tonight.
