3:41am - So the last couple of weeks my energy was taken up by participating in an employment readiness workshop. Even before that I wasn't working very hard on my projects, and while it went on I didn't have the oomph to do it at all.
I have to say, though, that just working on workshops and playing games gets pretty dull for me. I want to make things again. I'm probably going to keep working on my Dungeon Creator project, but I've also been thinking a lot about JRPG style games. Mostly on making the combat more fun.
JRPGs today have been able to make things more interesting by adding action elements in with the turn based ones, but that's kind've ending one of the last great turn-based game genres in favor of action. There are a lot of people in this world who simply can't play action games. While I'm not one of them, I do think about them sometimes and feel sympathy for them.
JRPGs are traditionally made up of story beats seperated by combat encounters, and to make a good JRPG you need to have both a good story and good combat. You can have other good things too, but those two are the main elements. Nowadays you can seperate them completely, with pure story visual novels and pure gameplay mobile RPGs. I think there's still room for the classic JRPG and CRPG type games, though.
I'm the sort of person with more ideas than time, though. I'd love to make my own JRPG series, and a CRPG series too, like the classic Ultima games. I'm not the only one who'd do that though. There's a few Ultimalikes that just came out.
Another thing that's been on my mind as a result of the job readiness workshops I was doing is teaching. Apparently there's a lot of opportunities for people to tutor or outright teach coding to kids and teenagers through online teaching services, and I'm considering giving that a try. I don't know if it's a good idea or not though. I don't have a lot of experience with kids or teaching. I'd probably want to go about it by talking to my cousin who is a teacher of kids, and see what she thinks first.
That said, I don't have to teach kids. I don't have to 'teach'. I've also thought about doing Tutorials online, like GDQuest, HeartBeast or PigDev. Or any of the others who did Unity tutorials when I was into that scene instead of Godot.
There's definately tutorials out there already, but different people teach and learn in different ways and I think I might be able to contribute to this, and make some money while I'm at it. The tricky thing is getting started. I'd have to do some 'proof of work' before anyone would want to invest in more, and that means working for free. I mean, I'm already working for free on my other projects, but this feels more for free than my other work.
Ahh well, it's something to think about at least.
4:28am - I've been looking at some of the latest Godot tutorials to see what other people are doing. It looks like they're mostly tutorials for creating graphical effects, not a lot of coding tutorials yet. Fancy graphics stuff like that aren't exactly my specialty. I'm more of a backbone coder. It's good to know where your strengths are though, I think.
4:49am - I found an interesting tutorial that's over seven hours long, that seems to cover the sorts of architecture teaching I was thinking about doing, so that's nice. I would probably do it differently, but I dunno exactly how they did it because it's a seven hour lesson.
4:53am - I should probably get back to working on my Dungeon Creator game. Maybe I should refer to it as a Dungeon Gardener game, though. I'm not sure which is more accurate.
Anyways last time I worked on this project I created a short to-do list of steps to follow to get the game prototype up and running. I really should figure out the architecture more first, I think I was just getting desperate to program anything last time.
I think the best next step would be to expand on the steps some more, instead of leaving them as high level 'do this big thing' steps. I want to not only break them down a bit more, I want to define them further so I know what I'm actually attempting to do.
That said, I'm running low on energy right now, so I'm going to relax a bit, and maybe I'll come back to this later.
3:51pm - Well I ended up napping a little and now I'm going to bed, so I guess I didn't get back to it later. Shoot. Well there's always tomorrow. I really need to break down the goal "Make the Map System" and define what the Map system should be, how it should work etc.
Anyways now I'm going to sleep.
