2:05am - So I've been looking into the code of Zylann's godot voxel tools and I can sort-of see what's going on, but it's hard to figure out how the pieces go together.
2:22am - I'm looking at the code and starting to get how it works together but as mush as I'm pushing myself against this I'm also bouncing off it pretty hard. I'm used to problems I can look up and someone already has a straightforward answer.
I keep wondering if I should just do everything from scratch myself, so that I understand it better, but that seems silly. I mean, this is a lot more complicated than the wheel, when it comes to reinventing. So at once it's harder to understand at a glance but also harder to reinvent from scratch.
2:46am - Okay I think that's enough staring at code I barely understand for now.
I'm going to switch tracks and do a little coding practice. I'm planning on doing a couple game jams in the next couple months and I want to do a point and click adventure game for the first one, whatever theme comes out. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, since I don't know much about point and click adventures, but it's something new to try.
I was thinking I'd throw together a Godot project and practice by making a point and click character controller and a little world to explore, but now that I've sat down and started thinking about point and click adventure games, and their adjacent games, I'm thinking that maybe I should play a few, or see if I can rustle up some videos on point and click adventure game design.
So I guess I'll do that for now.
4:53am - Going pretty well so far. I watched this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDt6XXsRXag then played some of The Little Acre, an adventure game I've had on my system a while but hadn't played yet. It's not bad! I could see that they had done some of the things that the video suggested, and not other things where they could've been useful. It also had some puzzles that were pretty easy, because they were based on puzzle logic I'm familiar with and were, so far, very simple.
Then I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkMTS8NvwQA
It's pretty interesting to look at the history of the genre, the rise and fall and rise again. I'm going to watch the sequel video to that one, then probably go to bed.
5:22am - Facinating stuff. I'm not sure I'll go to bed right away but I'm going to close up this work post. Hopefully I'll do some more tomorrow.
